“There is no end. There is no beginning. There is only the infinite passion of life.”

– Federico Fellini

With this sentiment resounding, I approach the end of my tenure, with overwhelming gratitude for the opportunity bestowed on me by the membership of the Indian Orthodontic Society. Your confidence allowed me to live my passion and serve the society as the Editor in chief of the Journal of Indian Orthodontic Society.

I have always maintained that Editor of the JIOS is not merely a position but a unique honor that brings with it immense responsibilities. Writing and publishing are privileges of self-expression, and the editor and custodian of the scientific journal thereby assumes solemn responsibilities.

Responsibilities to the readers, responsibilities to the authors and last but definitely not the least, responsibility to the society for the Indian Orthodontic Society deserves a journal that is regular in periodicity and showcases the excellent standards that Orthodontics in India has reached. My team and I have enjoyed working toward these goals and I am pleased to say we have achieved most of our objectives in the time given to us.

Just as our society has a place on the world stage, so is it but natural to aim for our journal also to assume its rightful place as a valuable orthodontic resource on the global platform. The process for this is already underway and I am sure that the fruits of the seeds sown will be realized soon and the journal will further flourish in the capable hands of the next editor and his team.

I am grateful for the incisive work put in by my entire editorial team, the section editors and peer reviewers who gave their valuable time and thought as we raced to meet deadlines. While it is not possible to mention everybody by name, I would be remiss if I were not to mention my pillars of strength, my associate editors Dr. Sundaram Venkateswaran and Dr. Vignesh Kailasam, who served steadfastly and selflessly as my sounding boards and contributed immensely with their astute and critical observations. I am also grateful to my assistant editors who shouldered their responsibilities with aplomb.

Science comes at a price and I thank the managing editor, Dr. Vadivel Kumar and the companies who supported us, our subscribers and our publishers for we have been fortunate that the finances of the Journal have been extremely healthy. I am grateful to the management of the IOS for the support, the many respected Advisors, Presidents, Hon Secretary and the office bearers I have worked with during my tenure.

By becoming open access and making PDFs freely available, we hope to improve the visibility of our journal and thereby enhance its metrics. While I thank all the authors and readers who kept the journal going with their contributions, the journal would require your consistent support to meet its long-term goals. The two JIOS symposiums and numerous lectures given in various forums gave us a platform for sharing common thoughts and aspirations. It is gratifying that Systematic reviews and Randomized control trials which are the highest forms of evidence have started making their way into the JIOS. We need to work together to create a common platform to continue raising the quality of research and reporting standards.

I consider myself particularly fortunate to have seen two landmark events during my tenure. The Indian Orthodontic Society turned 50 in 2015 and a special issue of the journal was published to mark this event. This year 2018 marks the 50th year of the Journal of Indian Orthodontic Society.

We have retrieved most of the issues from 1968 to 2000 and these archives will be accessible in a digital format to members soon. Issues from 2001 are already available on www.jios.in. While I have enjoyed every minute of labor that has gone into the JIOS, the challenges we faced made me realize the hard work that my esteemed predecessors have put into the journal to have brought it this far. It is noteworthy that the founder members of the IOS started the journal in 1968 within three years of the Society's inception and many of them served as its editors, as have several other distinguished members.

Thus, this 50th-year issue was envisaged as attempt to recognize the Hon Editors who have served the JIOS, and this issue is made extra special by the fact that some of our past editors have graciously made the time to contribute. I am eternally grateful to join this elite pantheon and feel honored to chronicle the change of guard for posterity.

I Remain Yours Truly,

Sridevi Padmanabhan
